PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S for GTA VI: buy the ecosystem, not the rumor.
If you already own a supported PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, do not switch platforms only for GTA VI yet. If you are buying new, choose around the games/friends/account ecosystem you want after GTA VI too. Rockstar has confirmed all three console families at launch but has not published a complete model-by-model performance table.
| Decision factor | PS5 / PS5 Pro | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA VI launch support | Confirmed | Confirmed | Confirmed |
| Disc option | Depends on model / optional drive | Series X disc model available | Digital only |
| 4K / high-refresh console capability | 4K, VRR, 120Hz output for supported games | 4K, VRR, up to 120 FPS for supported content | Lower-cost Series platform; HDMI 2.1 and up to 120 FPS support |
| Storage expansion | M.2 SSD expansion supported | Proprietary expansion cards + USB storage | Proprietary expansion cards + USB storage |
| Best reason to choose | PlayStation ecosystem; PS5 Pro for stronger general graphics headroom | Highest-end Xbox hardware and disc option | Lowest-cost route into current Xbox generation |
If you already own PS5
Stay on PS5 unless there is a broader reason to change ecosystem. Sony's console supports 4K, HDR, VRR, ALLM and 120Hz output for compatible games and displays. That gives it the display features most modern console buyers care about.
PS5 Pro adds stronger GPU performance, advanced ray tracing and PSSR upscaling, plus 2TB storage. Those are real platform advantages, but Rockstar has not announced enough GTA VI-specific Pro detail for us to call it a necessary GTA VI upgrade.
If you already own Xbox Series X
There is no evidence-based reason to abandon it for GTA VI. Xbox lists Series X with true 4K gaming capability, HDR, up to 120 FPS, HDMI 2.1, VRR and ALLM. Again, those are console capabilities; GTA VI's specific mode remains a separate question.
If you own Xbox Series S
Rockstar officially includes Xbox Series S in GTA VI's launch platforms. The Series S is the lower-cost current-generation Xbox and is less powerful than Series X, but we would not tell an owner to upgrade solely from speculation. Wait for Rockstar's actual technical details or post-launch evidence.
What about PS5 Pro?
PS5 Pro is Sony's more powerful option. It offers 2TB storage, stronger graphics performance, more advanced ray tracing and PSSR. If you are already shopping for the premium PlayStation experience across many games, that can justify the price. “GTA VI needs PS5 Pro” is not currently an evidence-based claim.
Friends and library matter more than benchmark rumors
GTA is a long-term ecosystem purchase. Your existing digital library, friends, subscription setup, accessories and preferred exclusives can matter more than an unconfirmed performance advantage. Switching platform for one unreleased title can make the total cost much higher than the console price.
Digital vs physical deserves attention
Rockstar says the physical GTA VI package contains a download code rather than a game disc. For PlayStation, code region must match the region rules Rockstar lists for your platform account. Xbox codes are described by Rockstar as not region-locked. Buyers importing copies should check this before purchase.
Our recommendation
Already own PS5, Series X or Series S? Keep it for now.
Buying a new premium console? Choose PS5/PS5 Pro versus Series X based on the ecosystem you want beyond GTA VI.
Lowest-cost current-gen entry? Series S is officially supported, but wait for confirmed GTA VI-specific detail if visual performance is your main concern.
