Do you need a new controller for GTA VI?
Probably not. The controller you already use with a supported PS5 or Xbox Series X|S is the right starting point. Buy another controller only if you need a spare, have stick/battery problems, want a premium controller for your entire library or want specific convenience features.
One GTA VI controller feature is already confirmed on PS5
The current PlayStation Store listing for GTA VI explicitly states that vibration function and trigger effects are supported with the DualSense wireless controller. That is a real game-specific feature we can cite before launch.
Sony's DualSense uses adaptive triggers that can vary resistance and haptic feedback delivered through dedicated actuators. The exact way Rockstar uses those features in GTA VI will only be clear from the final game, but support itself is confirmed on the store listing.
Standard DualSense: keep it unless you have a reason to replace it
If your DualSense is working well, there is no evidence-based reason to buy a new one just for GTA VI. A second controller can still make sense for charging rotation, local use in other games or replacing a worn pad.
What about a premium PlayStation controller?
A premium controller can add remapping, back controls or other customization, but that is a whole-library purchase. Do not justify a premium price by claiming GTA VI requires competitive-controller features that Rockstar has not announced.
Xbox: the standard wireless controller is already compatible
Microsoft's current Xbox Wireless Controller is compatible with Xbox Series X and Series S, uses Xbox Wireless on console, supports Bluetooth across several other devices and includes a 3.5mm headset jack. Microsoft advertises up to 40 hours of battery life using standard AA batteries, with real battery life varying by use.
The Xbox charging question is more relevant than a GTA-specific controller
Because the standard Xbox controller uses AA batteries by default, buyers may get more practical value from a rechargeable-battery or charging solution than from replacing a perfectly good controller. That is especially true for long launch-week sessions.
When a second controller is rational
- Your current controller has stick drift or unreliable buttons.
- You want one controller charging while another is in use.
- You use the same controller across console and PC and want a dedicated pad.
- You already wanted premium remapping/back-button features for multiple games.
- You are buying a console as a gift and want a complete accessory setup.
When we would not upgrade
- Because an ad says a “GTA VI controller” is required.
- Because you expect better GTA VI graphics or frame rate from a controller.
- Because an expensive pro controller is marketed as necessary for an unreleased single-player game.
PS5 vs Xbox controller decision
If controller feel is a major platform factor, try both ecosystems before buying a new console. DualSense has confirmed GTA VI vibration/trigger-effect support. Xbox's standard controller emphasizes familiar layout, replaceable batteries and broad device compatibility. Neither fact makes one console universally better.
PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S for GTA VI
Bottom line
Start with the controller you already own. On PS5, DualSense trigger and vibration support is officially listed for GTA VI. On Xbox, the standard Series controller is already the normal compatible input. Spend money when a spare, charging solution or premium feature solves a real problem — not because launch marketing creates urgency.
