Should you book a luxury hotel direct or through an OTA?
Book direct when a hotel-chain relationship, member rate, loyalty benefit or direct-property communication materially matters. Use an OTA when comparison, regional inventory, multi-hotel shopping or a specific OTA rate/policy is more useful. Compare the actual room and rate rules — not just the headline nightly price.
Why direct booking can make sense
Direct chain sites can be the cleanest route when you want the hotel's own rate inventory, property-specific information and direct account relationship. Major chains such as Marriott, IHG and Accor operate their own booking platforms and global affiliate programs, which means Proof & Merit can later link readers straight to an individual property without taking over the booking.
Loyalty earning, status benefits and member pricing depend on the specific hotel program and rate, so verify the chain's current terms rather than assuming every direct rate includes every benefit.
Why an OTA can make sense
OTAs make cross-property comparison easier. Booking.com offers broad accommodation inventory plus transport and attractions; Agoda is particularly relevant across Asia; Trip.com combines hotels with flights, trains, tours and tickets.
An OTA can therefore be useful when your first decision is which hotel, not simply which room to book at a property you have already chosen.
Compare the same room and rate rules
A cheaper headline price is not necessarily the cheaper booking. Compare:
- exact room category
- breakfast inclusion
- taxes and service charges
- cancellation deadline
- prepayment/refund rules
- currency charged
- loyalty/status implications
- included transfers or credits
If two rates have different cancellation or meal rules, they are not equivalent products.
For luxury hotels, room category matters more
At a high-end property, the economic difference between a base room, club/lounge room, suite and package can exceed the difference between booking channels. Compare the exact room, not just the hotel name.
What if the price is the same?
If the rate and cancellation rules are genuinely equivalent, direct booking can be attractive when you value a direct hotel relationship or chain membership. An OTA can still win when it offers easier multi-property comparison, a payment method you prefer or better availability for the dates you need.
What Proof & Merit will do
On future hotel pages, we intend to route readers to the most appropriate approved merchant for the property and market — sometimes a direct chain, sometimes Agoda, Trip.com or Booking.com. Commission economics are tracked separately from the editorial recommendation.
The external hotel or booking platform handles the reservation, payment, confirmation and service. Proof & Merit does not become the travel seller in this affiliate/referral model.
Bottom line
Do not choose “direct” or “OTA” as a religion. Choose the exact rate and booking route that produces the best combination of room, flexibility, benefits, price and service for that trip.
